Sample Size Calculation
for Medical Research
Understand the right formula for your study design. Use our free calculator or get expert calculation support with full justification for your guide.
Why Sample Size Matters
Sample size calculation ensures your study has enough statistical power to detect a real difference โ if one exists. Too small a sample = missed findings. Too large = wasted resources and ethical concerns.
Every ethics committee and thesis guide will ask: “How did you arrive at this number?” You need a defensible answer.
n = Zยฒ ร P ร (1-P) / dยฒ
n = 2 ร [(Zฮฑ + Zฮฒ)ยฒ ร ฯยฒ] / dยฒ
n = (Zฮฑ + Zฮฒ)ยฒ ร (p1q1 + p2q2) / (p1-p2)ยฒ
Formula by Study Design
| Study Design | Formula | Key Inputs | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-sectional (Prevalence) | n = ZยฒPQ/dยฒ | Prevalence, allowable error | Descriptive studies |
| Two means comparison | n = 2ฯยฒ(Zฮฑ+Zฮฒ)ยฒ/dยฒ | SD, difference to detect | Interventional RCTs |
| Two proportions | n = (Zฮฑ+Zฮฒ)ยฒ(p1q1+p2q2)/(p1-p2)ยฒ | Two proportions | Comparative studies |
| Case-control | Kelsey formula | Odds ratio, exposure | Etiological studies |
| Cohort study | n = (p1+p2)(Zฮฑ+Zฮฒ)ยฒ/(p1-p2)ยฒ | Incidence rates | Prospective studies |
| Diagnostic accuracy | n = ZยฒรSe(1-Se)/dยฒรP | Sensitivity, prevalence | Diagnostic tests |

Statistical Analysis
for Medical Thesis
Correct test selection, clean analysis, properly formatted tables and graphs. We run your SPSS/JASP analysis and explain every result.
Which Statistical Test Should You Use?
The most common question from PGs. Here’s a simplified guide.
| Data Type | Groups | Test to Use | SPSS Menu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Categorical vs Categorical | 2 independent | Chi-Square Test | Analyze โ Descriptives โ Crosstabs |
| Categorical (expected <5) | 2 independent | Fisher’s Exact Test | Same as Chi-Square, tick Fisher’s |
| Continuous (normal) | 2 independent | Independent t-Test | Analyze โ Compare Means โ Independent t |
| Continuous (normal) | 2 paired | Paired t-Test | Analyze โ Compare Means โ Paired t |
| Continuous (non-normal) | 2 independent | Mann-Whitney U | Analyze โ Nonparametric |
| Continuous (non-normal) | 2 paired | Wilcoxon Signed-rank | Analyze โ Nonparametric |
| Continuous (normal) | 3+ independent | One-Way ANOVA | Analyze โ Compare Means โ ANOVA |
| Continuous (non-normal) | 3+ independent | Kruskal-Wallis | Analyze โ Nonparametric |
| Continuous vs Continuous | โ | Pearson / Spearman Correlation | Analyze โ Correlate |
| Outcome prediction (binary) | โ | Logistic Regression | Analyze โ Regression โ Binary Logistic |
Descriptive Statistics
Mean, median, SD, frequency tables, percentages โ the foundation of every results chapter.
Association & Correlation
Chi-square, odds ratio, relative risk, Pearson/Spearman โ for finding relationships between variables.
Regression Analysis
Linear and logistic regression for predictors of outcomes โ increasingly required by examiners.
We Analyze Your Dataset
Send us your masterchart Excel file. We’ll run the full SPSS analysis, generate all tables and graphs, and deliver formatted results within 4โ6 working days.
Masterchart Creation
for Medical Research
Your raw data must be properly structured before any statistical analysis can begin. A well-coded masterchart saves hours of rework.
Your Data, Properly Organised
A masterchart (also called a master sheet) is an Excel spreadsheet where every patient/subject forms one row, and every variable forms one column. It is the input file for SPSS, JASP, or any statistical software.
Poor masterchart design is the single most common cause of statistical errors in PG theses.
Common Masterchart Mistakes
SNo | Age | Sex | Diagnosis | HbA1c | Outcome
1 | 42 | 1 | 2 | 8.4 | 1
2 | 38 | 2 | 1 | 7.1 | 0
3 | 55 | 1 | 3 | 9.2 | 1
- Properly coded Excel file
- Variable coding key / codebook
- SPSS .sav file with variable labels
- Descriptive frequency check output
How to Write the Discussion
in Your Medical Thesis
The discussion is where most PGs get stuck. It requires comparing your findings with published literature โ a skill that takes years to develop. We do it for you.
The Anatomy of a Good Discussion
Opening โ Restate the Key Finding
Begin by restating your most important result in 2โ3 sentences. Do not repeat the results section verbatim โ interpret it.
Compare with Previous Literature
For each major finding, cite 3โ5 published studies. Note where your results agree and where they differ. Explain possible reasons for differences (sample, setting, methodology).
Explain Mechanisms
Don’t just say “this agrees with X.” Explain the pathophysiological or biological mechanism that explains the observed relationship.
Acknowledge Limitations
Every study has limitations. Be honest โ single-centre, retrospective design, small sample, selection bias. Acknowledging limitations builds credibility.
State Clinical Implications
What does your finding mean for clinical practice? This section is what makes examiners remember your thesis.
In the present study, the mean HbA1c level among patients with diabetic nephropathy (8.4 ยฑ 1.2%) was significantly higher compared to those without nephropathy (7.1 ยฑ 0.9%), with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). This finding is consistent with the observations of Parving et al. (2010), who reported a strong association between glycaemic control and the rate of progression of diabetic nephropathy over a 5-year follow-up period. Similarly, Zoungas et al. (2012) demonstrated that intensive glucose lowering was associated with a 20% reduction in nephropathy events in the ADVANCE trial. The mechanism likely involves advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and reactive oxygen species that promote mesangial expansion and glomerular basement membrane thickening under conditions of sustained hyperglycaemia.
Common Mistakes
Starting with “In my studyโฆ” ยท Repeating results without interpretation ยท No citations ยท Copy-pasting from papers (plagiarism).
What Makes It Strong
Recent citations (last 5โ10 years) ยท Explains mechanisms ยท Acknowledges limitations ยท Clear clinical message.
Ideal Length
2,000โ4,000 words for a typical MD thesis discussion. Structured by your main variables, not by your tables.
Review of Literature
for Medical Thesis
A comprehensive, well-structured literature review sets the foundation for your entire thesis. Here’s how to write one that impresses your guide.
How to Structure the ROL
Background of the Disease/Condition
Epidemiology, pathophysiology, classification. 3โ5 studies establishing context.
Previous Studies on Your Main Variable
Group studies by theme, not by chronology. Summarise findings in 2โ3 sentences each.
Indian Studies (if available)
Examiners particularly value Indian data. Include studies from similar settings to yours.
Research Gap Statement
End the ROL with 2โ3 sentences explaining what is still unknown โ this justifies your study.
How Many Studies to Include?
| Thesis Type | No. of References |
|---|---|
| MD/MS (3-year) | 50โ100 references |
| DNB (2-year) | 30โ60 references |
| DM/MCh (Superspecialty) | 80โ150 references |
PubMed Search Strategy
“diabetic kidney disease”[Title])
AND “HbA1c”[Title/Abstract]
AND (“2015″[PDAT]:”2024″[PDAT])
AND “humans”[MeSH]
Use MeSH terms for precision. Filter: last 10 years, humans, English language.
Citation Methods
Vancouver (Numbered)
Most common in Indian medical universities. Numbers in superscript [1], [2] in text. References numbered in order of appearance.
APA / Harvard
Author-year format: (Smith et al., 2020). Used in some DNB and research-heavy institutions.
NLM / AMA
Used for journal submissions. Similar to Vancouver but with minor formatting differences for journal names.
Plagiarism Reduction
for Medical Thesis
Turnitin showing 40โ60%? We bring it below 10% through expert rewriting โ not just synonym replacement. Every word sounds like you wrote it.
Why Your Similarity
Score Is High
Copy-pasted review of literature
The most common source. Entire paragraphs lifted from papers without paraphrasing.
Standard methodology phrases
Phrases like “blood samples were collected” match dozens of other theses โ but these can be excluded.
Self-plagiarism from protocol
Copy-pasting your own protocol into the thesis โ iThenticate flags this as plagiarism.
Definition sections
Standard definitions from WHO, textbooks, and guidelines match widely โ these need paraphrasing.
Acceptable Similarity Ranges
Our Rewriting Approach
- Full paragraph-level paraphrasing
- Meaning preserved, wording changed
- Medical accuracy maintained
- Post-rewriting Turnitin check
- Guaranteed below 10% or free redo
